The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged both government leaders and citizens to uphold key democratic values and work together for a more just and inclusive society.
In a message marking the significance of June 12, CAN emphasized the importance of transparency in governance and the need to promote religious tolerance across the country.
The association, led by Archbishop Daniel Okoh, used the occasion to emphasize the need for responsible governance and greater efforts to protect the rights and freedoms of all Nigerians.
According to CAN, June 12 is a symbol of national commitment to democratic values. The memory of the 1993 elections remains an important reminder of the people’s desire for a just and democratic society. It is a day that continues to inspire hope and unity, even in challenging times.
A major point raised by the association was the importance of transparent leadership. CAN urged public officials at all levels to be open in their actions and decisions, stressing that good governance is central to any functioning democracy. They also pointed out the need to make better use of Nigeria’s many resources to address widespread issues such as poverty, unemployment, poor infrastructure, inadequate healthcare, and limited access to quality education.
In addition, the association called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to improve its operations in ways that build public confidence and ensure fair and credible elections. CAN noted that a well-functioning electoral system is essential for maintaining trust in democratic institutions and for allowing citizens to fully participate in the political process.
The statement also addressed the need for greater respect and understanding among people of different faiths. CAN encouraged Nigerians to reject all forms of religious intolerance and called on the government to protect individuals from being harmed or treated unfairly because of their beliefs. The association emphasized that religious freedom is a right that must be defended consistently and fairly.
CAN further called for urgent and consistent efforts to protect lives and property across the country. In their view, the government must take stronger steps to ensure that people feel secure in their communities.
The statement concluded with an appeal for peaceful dialogue and active citizen engagement. CAN reminded leaders that the freedoms of speech, press, and peaceful assembly are essential to any true democracy.
The body encouraged the government to maintain open communication with the public and to include citizens in finding solutions to the nation’s problems.
