Pope Leo XIV has expressed profound sorrow following the recent suicide bombing at a Greek Orthodox church in Damascus, Syria, which resulted in the deaths of 25 individuals and left more than 60 others injured.
The attack took place during a Sunday service at Saint Elias Church and was claimed by a lesser-known Sunni Muslim extremist group.
In a statement issued on June 24, 2025, the Pope extended his condolences to the victims and their families, offering prayers for those who were wounded.
The message, delivered by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, conveyed the Holy Father’s deep sadness over the loss of life and the destruction caused by the bombing.
Cardinal Parolin, speaking on behalf of the Pope, said, “His Holiness Pope Leo XIV was greatly saddened to learn of the tragic events at the Greek Orthodox Church of Mar Elias in Damascus. He sends his heartfelt condolences to all those affected by this devastating attack.”
The Pope’s statement also emphasized the importance of solidarity in the face of such violence, as well as the need for prayers and support for the survivors.
