Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, better known in the gospel music world as New Jerusalem, has passed away at the age of 53.
The beloved Nigerian singer was renowned for his unique ability to blend Tiv culture with Christian music.
In a heartfelt tribute, Chief Samuel Ortom, the former Governor of Benue State, expressed his deep sadness over Ikyereve’s death.
Ortom shared that the singer’s powerful songs had always moved him, particularly as a fellow lover of Christ. “His music had a profound impact on me,” Ortom remarked. “It drew me closer to him, and our connection grew into a strong bond, not only with him but also with his family.”
The former governor offered his prayers and extended his support to the Ikyereve family during this difficult time. He assured the family and the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe that he would continue to stand by them beyond the funeral.
The late gospel artist leaves behind his wife, Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, who is also a gospel singer, four children, and a wide network of relatives.
A funeral has been scheduled for July 5th, 2025, in Benue State, where he will be laid to rest.
His legacy in transforming Tiv music into a form of Christian worship will undoubtedly live on, leaving a lasting impact on both the gospel music scene and the communities he touched.
