Bishop David Abioye has expressed concern over the behavior of those in public office, pointing out how some individuals in power appear more focused on personal gain than the good of the people they are meant to serve.
He described a disturbing pattern where elected officials and those in high positions seem to trade the interests of their communities and countries for their own advantage. In his words, this behavior can be seen in many parts of the world today, and Nigeria is not an exception.
He spoke about how some governors and politicians willingly sacrifice the welfare of their states and regions just to secure something for themselves. This, he explained, is one of the root problems facing effective governance in modern times.
During his message, Bishop Abioye drew a clear line between two types of people in authority. He explained that a true leader is someone who is guided by a desire to serve others. Such a person does not focus on position or title but is moved by a genuine interest in the wellbeing of the people. On the other hand, he said, a ruler is usually driven by ambition. What matters most to them is holding on to power or climbing higher on the political ladder.
He emphasized that the difference is not just in the name or role, but in the mindset. A leader sees service as a responsibility and a privilege. A ruler, by contrast, sees office as a way to gather benefits for themselves. According to him, the reason many societies are not progressing as they should is because the ones who are supposed to lead are acting more like rulers than servants of the people
