The spiritual giant dedicated over six decades of his life to ministry, founding the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association (UUEA) and leaving behind an enduring legacy across Nigeria and the globe.
Early Life and Conversion:
Born Uma on January 7, 1945, in Asaga, Ohafia, Abia State, Dr. Ukpai was an Igbo man whose early life challenges forged his empathy and resolve. Losing his father at the age of 10, he often spoke about how those struggles became “a stepping stone” for his life and ministry, giving him a deep understanding of the poor. He converted to Christianity in 1958.
His quest for knowledge and qualification was extensive, securing a Certificate in Electrical Engineering Practice, a Diploma in Journalism, and both Bachelor and Doctorate Degrees in Divinity from institutions in the UK and USA.
His Ministry:
Dr. Ukpai’s ministry was characterized by “fiery evangelism, dynamic teaching of the Word and prophetic demonstrations of the power of God.” He was known for his citywide crusades held across Nigeria, with his Greater Lagos for Christ Crusade in 1985 notably leading to the formation of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), a movement he was a key founder and financier of.
His ministry, the non-denominational UUEA, is based in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and focused on building bridges between different denominations. Beyond evangelism, the association ran medical outreach programs for more than 30 years, demonstrating his commitment to humanitarian work.
The late evangelist was also a proprietor of several academic and medical institutions, including:
- Uma Ukpai School of Theology and Biblical Studies, Uyo
- Uma Ukpai Polytechnic Asaga
- Uma Ukpai Eye Centre, and King of Kings Hospital in Abia State, which serve several communities.
Family Life:
Dr. Uma Ukpai was a loving husband to Pastor Philomena Uma Ukpai, whom he married in 1975. The couple’s marriage was blessed with eight biological children and one adopted child. Tragically, he endured the loss of two of his children in a single car accident.
A spiritual father and mentor to many, his life was a testament to God’s power and love. The family’s tribute quoted Phillipians 1:21: “For indeed, ‘to live is Christ, and to die is gain.'”
While his physical absence is mourned, the family and millions of followers rejoice that he has finished his race and is resting in eternal praise.
Details of the obsequies are expected to be announced soon by the family. Dr Uma Ukpai’s extraordinary life and enduring legacy as a faithful soldier of the cross will continue to inspire generations.
