The Methodist Church Nigeria has announced plans to set up a university in Umuimenyi, located in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State.
Prelate Oliver Abah made this known during a courtesy visit to Governor Alex Otti on Thursday.
He said the Church is seeking a working partnership with the state government to bring the project to life.
GospelRaw noted that while addressing the Governor, the Prelate raised concerns over certain issues affecting the area, particularly around the communities of Lodu, Lohum, and Nkpa.
He appealed for the government’s intervention to prevent encroachment by land grabbers, which he noted could disrupt the development of the institution.
Abah stated that the Methodist Church has a long history of involvement in education, health, and social development in Nigeria.
He said the proposed university would contribute to the growth of the state and support the Church’s continued mission of national development.
“Methodist Church Nigeria has the record of being the pioneer of education and educational institutions, health institutions, and social welfare establishments in the space called Nigeria,” he said.
He described the initiative as a step toward providing educational opportunities for young people and praised the Governor for the progress made so far in the state.
“We therefore seek a collaborative partnership to advance the establishment of the University in Abia State to complement the laudable and giant strides of our performing Governor,” Abah continued.
“We believe that this partnership will not only benefit our Church, but also the entire state, as it will provide opportunities for young people to acquire knowledge and skills that will enable them to make meaningful contributions in nation-building.”
He also congratulated Governor Otti on his leadership and offered prayers for continued success.
In response, Governor Otti welcomed the plan and assured the Church of his administration’s support.
“We are very happy about it, and we can assure you that any support that we can give, we will not hesitate to render it,” the Governor said.
“There is no doubt that the Methodist Church has been a pioneer in missionary activities in Nigeria and, of course, the health and education sectors of the economy.”
Governor Otti emphasized the state government’s commitment to education, noting that it consistently receives the highest budgetary allocation under his administration.
“It would be our pleasure to support you and partner with you in the establishment of this University,” he added.
