Fresh violence has broken out in the Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, following a deadly attack on the Ding’ak community in Mushere Chiefdom.
The assault, which took place overnight, led to the deaths of at least two individuals, the destruction of homes and churches, and the looting of food supplies.
The attack began around midnight and lasted until approximately 4:30 a.m. Armed men, reportedly equipped with sophisticated weapons, overwhelmed local vigilantes, according to reports from the area.
Farmasum Fudang, the Chairman of the Bokkos Cultural Development Forum (BCDF), confirmed in a phone interview that two of the victims were officials of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN). He also reported that two COCIN churches, along with several private homes, were set on fire during the attack. Additionally, crops, including maize, were destroyed, and livestock such as cows, goats, sheep, chickens, and ducks were stolen. Stored food supplies were also taken.
Fudang stated that the attackers came from the usual route between Ding’ak and Kopmur. Despite the presence of a security checkpoint less than a kilometer from the scene, he claimed that while soldiers fired warning shots into the air, they did not engage with the attackers.
This incident is part of an ongoing series of attacks in the region, with Fudang noting that it followed a similar assault on the Ndimar community just two days prior. He has called on both the federal and state governments to intervene and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
As of now, security authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
