Police in Akwa Ibom State have launched an investigation following the death of a 45-year-old man who was found with a gunshot wound inside a church where he had been sleeping with his family.
The incident took place around 12:10 a.m. on Tuesday in Ikot Oku Usung, a village in Ukanafun Local Government Area.
According to a statement issued in Uyo on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the deceased, identified as Mr Udeme Uko, had been sleeping inside the church with his wife and children when a gunshot was reportedly heard around 12:10 am. He was later found with a gunshot wound to the head.
John stated that officers were informed of the incident by members of the public after the man’s wife raised an alarm. A team of police personnel was sent to the location, and a locally made pistol was recovered at the scene.
The body of the victim has been moved to the mortuary. An autopsy is expected to be carried out.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Baba Azare, has ordered a full investigation into the case. He has also instructed that all available resources be used to find those responsible.
