Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, has urged religious leaders across Nigeria to remain committed to fostering interfaith harmony, rejecting violence, and promoting reconciliation in conflict-affected communities.
Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, made the call at the opening of the Second Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria in Ikot Ekpene.
He described faith-based organisations as crucial to building peace, unity, and moral integrity in the country.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the SGF, Yomi Odunuga, the President expressed appreciation for the role of the Catholic Church and other religious groups in providing education, healthcare, and social support.
“The Catholic Church has been a reliable partner in our national development. Your contributions in education, healthcare, and welfare, especially in underserved areas, speak volumes. You have supported people in times of hardship, offered solace during grief, and stood up against corruption and injustice,” Tinubu said.
He called on religious leaders to continue opposing extremism, hatred, and divisive tendencies to help promote genuine national unity.
He reiterated his commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerians, adding that his administration is addressing the underlying causes of insecurity and unrest, such as poverty, unemployment, and inequality.
The President further pointed to recent economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates, as part of efforts to stabilize the economy and lay the foundation for long-term prosperity.
He also sought the support of religious leaders in complementing government initiatives aimed at tackling insecurity, expanding social investment programs, boosting agriculture, and revitalizing infrastructure.
“Our efforts in creating an environment conducive to peace and progress are focused on ensuring that all Nigerians have the opportunity to fulfill their potential,” he emphasized.
