Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Rev. Sam Aboyeji, the General Overseer of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, has advised political figures to refrain from turning social events into platforms for political campaigns.
He emphasized that it is far too soon to begin evaluating the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking at a press conference to announce the upcoming 70th anniversary celebrations of the church, Rev. Aboyeji warned that early political maneuvering could become a major distraction for the current government.
According to him, the focus should be on addressing the critical security and economic issues that are currently plaguing the nation, rather than engaging in premature political posturing.
“We must allow the government to focus on its duties without the added pressure of early politicking,” Rev. Aboyeji stated. “Nigerians are grappling with significant challenges, and now is the time for effective solutions, not electioneering.”
The press conference took place at the church’s national headquarters in Yaba, Lagos, where Rev. Aboyeji was joined by other church leaders and members of the platinum jubilee planning committee.
The event marks the beginning of the church’s weeklong celebration, titled 70 Years of a Complete Gospel, which will run from July 21 to 27, 2025.
Reflecting on the significance of the milestone, Rev. Aboyeji shared that the anniversary was not only a time for spiritual reflection but also an opportunity to acknowledge the church’s long-standing contributions to society.
The church, which has become a major force in Nigeria with more than 5,000 branches, has played a key role in both spiritual revival and humanitarian outreach over the past seven decades.
“Our anniversary goes beyond spiritual revival,” he remarked. “It’s also a celebration of our ongoing efforts in health missions, musical outreach, youth empowerment, and community service.”
